Since February/March, all the dancehouses in Europe have been closed for public. While many countries start easing the lockdown, there is still a long way to go before we join EDN members in shows and festivals.

While doors might be closed, there is still many activities you can take part in with us - see here below a growing selection of trainings, shows, workshops and more.

Exceptional events and initiatives - do not miss!

Special events & platforms

  • Grand (Re)Union is co-initiated by Art Stations Foundation (Poznan, Poland) and brings together online event and publications. Initially planned as a two-week (live) event, it is now unfolding as a two-year project starting online on June 20, 2020. Check more here.
  • Under the hashtag #NoEtDesballis, Mercat de les Flors proposes a full online programme on its website - open educational resources, context on the shows that are temporally available online, portraits of choreographers... take time to dive into a multiplicity of resources (especially if you understand Castillan/Catalan!)
  • DansBrabant is developing an On-Demand video platform in which you can access Dance Films directly from the artists for 2 days. The money directly goes to the artists to support them in these times. See the films here.
  • Tanzhaus Zurich (Switzerland) is a partner in the Platform You Never Dance Alone, an attempt to create an alternative place to stay connected in both movement and language despite isolation. The internet dance participation project invites you to encounter the state of emergency in a dancing and playful way. Let us know your thoughts - as movement, choreography, spaces, sounds, or otherwise.

Shows that go online only for some days - mark your agendas

Shows & festivals

  • #INTERPLAYDIGITAL – the international dance festival led by Natialia Casorati (Mosaico Danza) – comes back for its 20th edition, with a fresh new digital format created in order to fight the restrictions imposed by COVID-19.
    From May 20th to May 30th, the audience will be accompanied by streaming perfomances, video-reviews and web-meetings; the other half of the festival, which consists in site-specific and urban shows, will be postponed, instead, during the autumn (September-November 2020), being hosted as a part of other exhibitions and choreographic events.   • The Place (London, UK) started on April 30 "The Place Online", a new online digital programme that showcases a performance every Thursday evening. The performance remains available until the next Monday on the Place's website. All screenings are framed by a short introduction from the artist, and audiences will have the opportunity to donate to support The Place during this difficult time. See more here.
  • Tanec Praha (Prague, Czech Republic) has moved its shows online. See the program here and mark your agenda for the shows you want to see (available on the day of the event only!)
  • Take a Seat at Trafo (Budapest, Hungary) on the last week-end of May: the final edition of smART! XTRA 5.0 // AV Composers bringing together a mix a various disciplines, from audio, visual, dance and more. The content is available 24 hours after the screening's premiere, on May 30th.   • With its Digital Stage, Sadler's Wells (London, UK) offers full length performances on its website. Have a look at the offer here.
  • Les 3 C-L (Luxembourg) hosts monthly online dance shows on the 3rd of each month. For this third edition of the 3 DU TROIS ONLINE, TROIS C-L joins the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg and the Théâtre du Centaure to present an exceptional evening around the TalentLAB. On Wednesday 3 June 2020, (re)discover some of the representations that marked the 2017 and 2019 editions → SWAN by Hannah Ma, 3,14π by Andrea Rama and PARASITE by Frieda Gerson. Keep active - professional dancers and others!

Trainings & dance classes

  • The CN D has been closed since mid-March 2020. Working on its missions, the CN D offers professional trainings on a daily basis: a 30-min class is available every day at 11h00 (CET) for 24 hours on its website. Check the classes here.
  • Dansateliers (Rotterdam, NL) continues to host its Movement Class with Connor Schumacher. 60-min zoom event on Monday evening (18 May, 25 May, ...), what better to get your week started! Find out more here.
  • Training at Dansehallerne (Denmark) is a programme of training sessions, sharing of practices and workshops directed at professional artists within the fields of dance and choreography. Parts of it have been rescheduled online - see more here.
  • Tanzquartier Wien (Austria) offers workshops and trainings. On its German pages, you can find the offer that moved online.
  • Dance Base (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK) has a very large offer of dance classes online. Have a look at the overview here. They also offer professional dance classes.
  • Under the title "Home is where the dance is", DanceEast Jerwood (UK) offer a large programme of dance classes. Have a look here.

Unique projects that you can take part in

Participative projects

  • Animal Kingdom - what animal is in you? The Animal Kingdom Project is an initiation between Numeridanse (project of Maison de la Danse, supported by the CN D) and Akram Khan Company. Inspired from the Company’s production Outwitting the Devil that centres the human connection to the natural world, this project is an opportunity for you to evoke the wild things that we believe, live in you. Send in your video before September 13!
  • La Maison de la Danse (Lyon, France) organises the Challenge Minecraft where you are invited to recreate the house on Minecraft. Take part until June 14 and take a shot at the prizes (only for residents of France!) See all details in this event page.

  • Dance House Lemesos (Cyprus) brings its free webinar series online!The programme «In Contact With» goes online and Dance House Lemesos continues to support the art community by offering a series of free webinars.   • Throughout the quarantine, Dansmakers Amsterdam (The Netherlands) has hosted research residencies as part of the New Adventures trajectory.   • La Briqueterie (France) invites you to discover the latest issue of Repères, cahier de danse: Anna Halprin, A Century of Dance. Issue 45 is a portrait of an exceptional woman whose innovations in dance are evident throughout her long career. American, born in 1920, Anna Halprin is also a visual artist, a human rights activist and creator of the Planetary Dance. Find the publication in French here.

  • Dansateliers (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) invites you to discover its artists and team members during this crisis. This is a good moment to get to know the diversity of choreographers active in Rotterdam. More here.

  • Dansens Hus (Oslo, Norway) has listed its "Corona interviews" here. These took place in Norwegian and English, with choreographers and dancers.
  • The bi-annual publication of ADC Association pour la Danse Contemporaine (Geneva, Switzerland) released in December 2019 is as relevant as ever. With the topic "Penser l'écologie depuis la danse contemporaine" (Thinking ecology from the perspective of contemporary dance), ADC invites its readers to a reflection on the relevance of dance in society.   • K3 (Hamburg, Germany) has released its K3 Magazine. K3 Magazine is a platform for practical dance tutorials, choreographic instructions, thematic and artistic contributions and for references to tenders and qualification offers. Find it here.

  • Dansens Hus (Oslo, Norway) compiled a list of 15 activities to do at home "during the holidays", which definitely work during lockdown! Have a look at the list here.
  • Ponec (Czech Republic) brings its performances for young audiences online on Sundays. And adds some good tips to do with children - see here.

Kino Šiška Announces CoFestival 2022

The 11th edition of the International Festival of Contemporary Dance will be held in Ljubljana from 25 November to 1 December 2022.

The festival also offers a discursive programme with talks, book presentations, a film program, and the release of a new publication to mark the tenth anniversary of the festival.

EDN Releases the Publication "Environmental Sustainability in Contemporary Dance: Emerging Issues, Practices and Recommendations."

Commissioned research publication examines the relationship between environmental sustainability and contemporary dance, with a particular focus on the role of dance production centres.

The publication provides the context, references and examples of where and how dance intersects with environmental sustainability, and which set of actions can lead to effective action. Both executive summary and full publication are available for download.

Perform Europe's Documentary Published

20 October 2022

The documentary was shot in June 2022 during the Perform Europe’s Impact Event.

With contributions from 19 Perform Europe's partnerships, consortium and jury members, the consortium consisted of IETM - International network for contemporary performing arts, the European Festivals Association (EFA), Circostrada Network, European Dancehouse Network and IDEA Consult created the Perform Europe’s Documentary, which aims to reflect and unravel the impact that taking part in the Perform Europe pilot had on the partnerships and the communities to which they toured, as well as look behind the scenes at the Perform Europe journey and selection process.
