Guiding principles

Espaço do Tempo is a performing arts cross disciplinary organisation. It strongly believes in new forms of theatre language as well as contemporary dance, as being at the center of some of the most interesting and innovative experiences on stage today. Therefore, supporting emerging artists is a key part of its mission, mainly in 4 different directions:

  • Inviting projects in residence at our venue and assisting their productions.
  • Organising advance training projects where artists share visions, methods and skills, through platforms that are cross disciplinary, cross cultural and cross generational.
  • Helping promote artists and their work, by organising local events and open rehearsals, as well as international gatherings such as the Portuguese Platform for Performing Arts.
  • Developing and consolidating new audiences for contemporary dance, new theatre and performance art, by programming regularly in its venues.

History

Until 2018, O Espaço do Tempo was based in the Convento da Saudação, an ancient Dominican monastery dating from the 16th century, on the top of a hill, in the beautiful town of Montemor-o-Novo, in Portugal (100 km from Lisbon).

Building and facilities

Facilities include 5 large rehearsal studios equipped with grid, light, sound, video and internet. In addition to very generous social areas, such as offices and a beautiful central cloister, it offers 14 double rooms and a small, but fully equipped, black-box theatre located in town.

Due to a heavy storm that broke the roof of the convent, the activities of O Espaço do Tempo have been relocated throughout the city of Montemor-o-Novo.
