Guiding principles

To put artistic creation at the heart of each action, KLAP fosters opportunities for choreographic research, artistic creation for artists at various stages of their development and by inviting local and international companies to use the space. It supports a diversity of experience and aesthetic styles and encourages public engagement through work-in-progress sharing and education programmes.

History

KLAP Maison pour la danse was built by the City of Marseille in response to an initiative by choreographer Michel Kelemenis. It was founded in 2011.

Building and facilities

KLAP offers 3 studios of varying size and function having the flexibility to cater for a range of uses :

  • The creation space (240 persons) – is a residency space for visiting companies that is equipped with production areas, grills and scenic materials. It offers the technical conditions necessary to complete creations, present public sharings and to host performances.
  • The small studio (40 persons) – is specifically dedicated to continuing education, amateur practice and educational awareness programmes.
  • The large studio (90 persons) – is primarily used for rehearsals of new works and long-term residencies. It can welcome the public for intimate presentations and for works-in-progress, public sharings.
  • The Resource center is a place for learning about local, national and international choreographic events. It provides a station for consulting videos linked to Numéridanse, Maison de la Danse Lyon’s comprehensive digital database and archive of contemporary dance. A documentation area is available to professionals.
