Guiding principles

Located in the centre of Faro, DeVIR CAPa runs an artist residency programme for independent creators’ support. It focuses on national and international, emergent proposals that invest preferably in experimenting and mixing languages. The programme is open to anyone interested, through annual applications.

Because CAPa is integrated in national and international exchange and cooperation networks between kindred structures, it has been able to co-produce works and maintain a diverse and regular programming. This way, CAPa has affirmed itself as an alternative to other venues in the region, helping promotion and gathering new public for the Performing Arts in the south of Portugal.

In partnership with a group of municipalities and schools in the region, CAPa develops the SUB 12 & SUB 18 project, directed at the infant-juvenile public, encompassing training courses and shows of different areas of the Performing Arts, involving students and teachers in different school levels, bringing them closer to artistic languages that complement their curricular training.

With the ambition to sensitize the public, this centre establishes partnerships and cooperation protocols with higher education institutions in the region, promotes workshops, open rehearsals and informal talks between creators and the public.

History

DeVIR is a cultural activities association which started working in 1994 with the launch of an international contemporary dance festival, a sul. In 2001 it opened CAPa, Centro de Artes Performativas do Algarve.

It features a documentation centre, with a video collection specialised in dance comprised of about 1500 video records collected through the material gathering policy that has served as a basis for the programming conception of the a sul International Contemporary Dance Festival since 1994.
